ABOUT ME
Discover the key moments that have shaped my brand
A barber in Brighton
Has it ever happened to you that your heart tells you to pursue your passion but your brain reminds you that you have to pay the rent? It has happened to me. And, for logical reasons, I decided to put my vocation aside to meet my adult needs. I studied music.
If you talk to my father, he'll tell you that I was always in my room drawing or "strumming my guitar." Well, he'd tell you that in English, because both of us (with an artist's soul) were born near London (he before me, of course). I always had the urge to move, to experiment, to connect... and, far from my hometown, I began a profession that I would dedicate myself to for decades: barber on the English coast.
Spain (in the form of a Spanish woman) enters my life
Me: the quintessential Englishman, the kind who eats dinner at 7 p.m. She: with her curly black hair, the kind who has an 8 p.m. snack. Together: a union based on respect, learning, care, and overcoming challenges. What if I told you we literally didn't understand each other when we first met, and that we're still together today? She introduced me to traditions, places, objects. She would tell me things like: "These are jotas, look at the embroidery on the costumes." "I urgently need to show you the Prado Museum; you can't live without knowing Goya." "Do you know what a botijo is?" And I loved it. All of it.
Alfie "the dog": the love of our lives
I remember the day we adopted Alfie, a 5 kg dog who was full of fears. He came to complete us, to fill our souls. Even though he was "the terror of the neighborhood" due to his strong personality (we firmly believe he thought he was a Pit Bull, and we never contradicted him on that), he filled our home with joy. One day, we bought him a handmade Batman collar at a market. Alfie went from being cool to being super cool. And that's how, unknowingly, my business idea began.
An international move: we're off to Madrid
The idea of living in Spain was always there. But, you know? It was very complicated. Everything accelerated due to my wife's relative's illness, and in just four months from when we found out, we were already living in Madrid. And here I am: in sunny Spain, everything is great... But, without speaking the language, how can I be a hairdresser? Some of you will say it's possible, that the concept "trim my ends" is very relative. True. An international move is crazy: it puts you in a mental state where you might leave the TV and bring the trash can. Following this logic, we brought a small sewing machine we had, one of those things you buy for... nothing! One day, alone at home, I saw it, grabbed a handkerchief, and started practicing by following a YouTube tutorial. And I remembered the musician I hadn't become, and the Batman necklace, and I admitted to myself that I was fed up with being a hairdresser, and I plucked up courage (with a lot of fear), and I looked at Alfie, and I thought of regional costumes, of Goya, and of botijos (all at once)... That's it: I'm starting a new life. And that's how "My puppy Alfito" began: handmade accessories for puppies and humans.
Designing Tradition: The Values of My Artisan Brand
What am I? A very British Brit, but with a fusion; What do I have? A new sewing machine, and a lot of art that I need to express; Where am I? In Madrid, Spain; What do I like? The cultural grandeur of my new country. When you start living in a different country, you can see things from an outside perspective. You see the majesty of traditions, what to preserve, what makes sense. And that has been my drive: to design Spanish traditions from my perspective, from what I feel, from who I am. In the time I've been in Spain, my brand has evolved, and I've taken my time to define and refine it until I found the concept I'm comfortable with. I am a Brit who, without abandoning my essence, reflects the joy that emanates from Spanish traditions, from the pride of Madrid, from the "Mayos" discovering the San Isidro meadow. I'm inspired by the colors and compositions of regional costumes, by the towns I visit, by new flavors, by the new people I meet. All designs are created by me, stemming from the inspiration that arises from observing what now surrounds me. Classic inspiration, modern approach. Functional. Authentic. Durable. Entirely handmade. And I materialize it with quality, durable, local products. Paying attention to even the smallest (no matter how minuscule) detail.
Thanks and thank you
I want to thank everyone who is joining me on this journey. I'll start with Alfie, who, although he crossed the rainbow bridge a few years ago, will always be a part of me. Thank you for inspiring me, for being so incredibly charming, and for being my soulmate. To my wife, for supporting me, holding me up, and never doubting my abilities. To my friends and family, all fully equipped with "My little dog Alfito." Many thanks to the anonymous Spanish ladies I've met at the markets I've attended. For helping me improve my creations by acting as "quality agents." For calling me "artist." For telling me so many times, with a very serious face and a very solemn voice: "You have incredible hands, I'm telling you, and I know what I'm talking about." (No one would dare contradict them.) To the small fabric shops in the center of Madrid where I buy my materials. For advising me, for making me feel so good, for switching to Spanglish to understand each other. And finally, to you. Who values handmade products. Who appreciates the work, effort, and dedication hidden behind each piece. Here is the result of my adventure. Warren
